John B. Mulligan, a current shareholder in Avansino, Melarkey, Knobel,
Mulligan and Mckenzie was born in Tacoma, Washington. Mr. Mulligan
received his Bachelor of Science in Physical Education with a Journalism
minor in 1974 from the University of Nevada, Reno as well as his
Bachelor of Arts in French with a Spanish and German minor in 1981
from the University of Nevada, Reno. He was on the Dean’s
Honor Roll and was named Outstanding Graduating Student for French.
John completed various accounting courses at the University of California,
Berkley from 1985-1987. Mr. Mulligan did his graduate work at the
University of California, Riverside where he was awarded the Regents’
Fellowship in Comparative Literature. Mr. Mulligan attended McGeorge
School of Law where he received several Academic Scholarships and
completed his J.D. with distinction in 1985. He then went on to
receive his degree in LLM in taxation from McGeorge School of Law
in 1991.
Mr. Mulligan is a member of the Nevada State Bar, California State
Bar and the U.S. Tax Court. His professional career began with his
work in the United States Attorney’s Office where he served
as a Law Clerk for David Levi, U.S. Attorney from 1984 to 1985.
From 1985-1987, John worked as a Tax Senior in the Oakland Tax Office
of Touche Ross & Co. where he prepared corporate, individual
and partnership tax returns and researched and consulted with clients
on various tax issues. In 1986 he was awarded the Incentive Bonus
Award for being the Top Staff Member. Mr. Mulligan went on to begin
his legal career in 1987 as an Associate Attorney at the Reno, NV
firm of Lionel Sawyer & Collins where his main areas of practice
included tax planning, tax litigation and commercial litigation.
John became a shareholder in Avansino, Melarkey, Knobel & Mulligan
in 1991, where he has continued to focus his practice in the areas
of tax planning, tax litigation, commercial law and estate planning.
John is married to UNR professor and writer Dr. Emma Sepulveda.
They have one daughter, Maria Cristina Mulligan, who is an elementary
school teacher in Reno, and one son, Jonathan (JJ) Mulligan who
is a recent UNR graduate and is completing a year of travel and
volunteer work in South America. John and his wife Emma enjoy traveling
worldwide, and spending time at their second home in Costa Brava,
Chile, or at their small vineyard in San Rafael, Argentina. John
is a former college and professional basketball player, who enjoys
playing golf nowadays.
